The Law Society will not deal with a complaint that alleges some form of actionable negligence. It will leave the complainant to pursue that remedy himself. But if the complaint involves some form of professional misconduct (including excessive delay the professional body may be willing to act. The complainant has no right to be involved in the processing of his complaint in the case of a complaint against a solicitor however, a client who is dissatisfied with the final outcome can refer the matter to the Lay Observer whose statutory function is to review the way the Law Society carries out its functions in regard to handling complaints. He is appointed by the Lord Chancellor and is independent of the Law Society.
  Complaints against solicitors should be directed to the Law Society. Complaints against barristers should be sent to the General Council of the Bar.
  Both professional bodies have a number of sanctions that can be applied against lawyers who have broken the professional rules. In extreme cases this can include disbarment (barristers) or being struck off the Rolls (solicitors). None of these penalties however, assist the client.
  If the client has been defrauded of money by a solicitor or a member of his firm, he can apply to the Law Society for compensation out of the Compensation Fund. This applies only to financial loss attributable
