e value of the money of property at stake and the importance of the matter to the client. One can ask the solicitor for an estimated beforehand. And even shop around on the basis of such estimates, but solicitors will normally at best give only a rather approximate figure, subject to the caveat that the ultimate fee will depend on the nature of the individual case.
  
  Challenging the Bill
  
  One is, of course, always free to ask a professional person to look again at his bill if it seems too high. Bur there are, in addition, a number of other methods of checking whether the fee charged is too high. If the work did not involve litigation of court work one can ask for a remuneration certificate from the Law Society. The client asks the solicitor to send the file to the Law Society. It is considered by a member of the Council of the Law Society or by some other experienced solicitor. The client will be asked for his view. The bill can be upheld or reduced ? it cannot be increased. There is no charge for the service. The right to a remuneration certificate can be invoked even after the bill has actually been paid ? but it must be asked for within one month of paying the bill, or of learning of the right to ask for it. A solicitor cannot sue for his fees without informing the client of the right. But apart from this, there is no duty to inform the client about it.
  
  Complaints against Lawyers
  
  There are two different ways of complaining about a lawyer’s work.
