  Finding a lawyer
  
  The most usual way to find a lawyer is through some form of private recommendation by a friend or relative. Bank managers, trade union officials, police officers, citizens’ advice bureaus and many others in the community may be able to recommend a solicitor. The Law Society has, in recent years, also published a directory for each area of the country showing the firms than undertake legal aid work (most do) and what classes of such work they will handle. These directories (called Referral of Solicitor’s Lists) have been widely distributed in public libraries, courts, citizens’ advice bureaus, etc. They show an emergency telephone number that can be called out of office hours. The lists also give the areas where there are law centers and places and places which have part-time legal advice service.
  
  Lawyers’ Charges
  
  Like other private practitioners, lawyers can normally charge what they regard as a reasonable fee in all the circumstances. The fees in the main source of income ? conveyancing ? used to be controlled by statutory scale charges, but these were abolished in 1972. The factors that the solicitor may take into account are the complexity of the matter, the skill involved, the number and importance of the documents, the circumstances in which the work is done (for instance whether under pressure of time), the amount of time spent, the
